The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Mary reveals the goal of our life.

Modern psychology and neurobiology have shown that our aim or where we focus our attention determines what we see - what we perceive.  We need to have a goal in order for the path forward to be revealed.  A clear goal allows us perceptibly to eliminate the distractions in our life.  With a clear goal we will see the steps that will get us there, and we will not see or almost eliminate without thinking those things that would get in the way of that goal.  When we have a clear goal, those “bad” options are most often not even considered.  An example… I heard an interview with a very successful actor and movie producer who travels often for his work.  He is a married man with children.  The interviewer asked him, “You are good-looking, you have achieved a certain amount of fame, you have money, and you travel frequently… It would be very easy for you to have an affair or multiple affairs, why don’t you?”  He said, “Frankly, I don’t find that a temptation at all or something attractive at all.  In fact, I find the thought of it repulsive.”  He went on to explain that because his attention and his love are so focused on his wife and family, anything that would jeopardize the upward trajectory of his life since getting married and having children doesn’t even enter the picture.  He credits his wife and children, in fact, as the reason for his success, as the reason for why he became a mature and responsible man.  They gave a meaning, clarity, and a direction to his life that enabled him to focus on the things that bring the most fulfillment to life and to leave behind the things that don’t.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary reveals our destiny as human beings - the goal of our life which is to share in the glory of God.  Closeness to Mary, a devotion to Mary, helps us to stay focussed on the true goal of our life and to avoid those things that would be obstacles to reaching our destiny.  Her love and attention were always on Jesus.  He was her life.  She was all for him.  Mary brings Jesus to us, i.e., reveals his presence, and when we come into his presence, we recognize our destiny.  The sign that we’ve recognized our destiny is what we see in Elizabeth: the life in us “leaps for joy”.  We are being moved interiorly toward the Lord.  Mary reveals the direction and path to our life - the Way - that Christ is our life.  We pray that through her intercession that our hearts may constantly long for Christ - that we keep our attention on our destiny and keep moving toward it.  Mary, being without sin, was assumed immediately into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life.  Ours is a path of purification and reintegration that finds its fulfillment when Christ comes again.  Mary is the hope for those who belong to Christ.  May we always be attentive to the things that are above - our destiny revealed in Mary - so that we may merit to be sharers in her glory.
