The Ascension of the Lord

In the Incarnation of our Lord, God united himself to us and dwelt among us.  Heaven came to earth.  In Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, he demonstrated his victory over death, and he spent forty days with the disciples after he rose, confirming for them through many proofs that he was alive - that he had conquered death.  But Jesus doesn’t rise from the dead just to show us his glorified body - coming through locked doors, appearing as a “stranger” and in other unexpected forms.  He rose from the dead to take us with him to heaven.  Our destiny is not complete until we too enter into heaven.  In his ascension into heaven, Jesus brought our humanity with him and opened the door to heaven for us.  His ascension gives us hope because the path to our destiny has been opened, and Jesus promises us the Holy Spirit to give us the power from on high to stay united with him on the journey along the path he has opened up for us.  “La ascensión es ya nuestra victoria, y adonde ya se ha adelantado gloriosamente nuestra Cabeza, esperamos llegar también los miembros de su cuerpo.”  His presence with us gives us hope that we will follow along the path he opened up for us.

Why is the Ascension important?  We can have all the power in the world, and all knowledge about God, but if a path is not opened for us and we have no one to show us the way or clear the way for us, we are stuck - we cannot reach out goal - our dreams and desires are frustrated.  Here’s an analogy from recent sports history that I think helps to convey the idea.  The Offensive Player of the Year in the National Football League last season was the running back Saquan Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles.  He had an amazing season, almost breaking the single-season rushing record.  He helped the Eagles get to the Super Bowl and to win the Super Bowl.  Barkley, like all football players, desired to be a Super Bowl champion.  What enabled him to do it this year with the Eagles compared to the season before when he played for the New York Giants?  Physically, Barkley probably wasn’t any stronger or faster this year or had better skills in other areas compared to last year.  The difference this season that allowed Barkley to run so much more and to reach his dream was that he played for a team that could open a path for him.  He played with teammates that could lead the way and clear the way for him to reach his full potential.  The team that could open the path for him to run gave him hope that he could achieve his goal.  As good as Barkley is, he couldn’t reach his goal apart from the team.

The Church is the team that opens the path for us - the path for us to reach our destiny in heaven.  The Church is where we are united to Christ and can receive, through the sacraments, the power from on high to follow Jesus to eternal life in Heaven.  Let’s practice with the “team” that is “on the road to victory” and rejoice that Christ has opened the path for us.
