Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God - - “Mary at the Crossroads of History"
Sometime in early December, I found in the bottom of my office mailbox a small book with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the cover. I get all kinds of promotional items, but I didn’t remember when this book landed in my mailbox. It wasn’t wrapped and didn’t come with a note or a cover letter. I don’t know who gave it to me. But with the feasts of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe coming up, I picked up the book and gave it a look. The title of the book is, “Mary at the Crossroads of History”, and it was written by a Reverend Francis Hoffman and was published in 2020. Father Hoffman traces how at what he calls “inflection points” in history - moments when it seems that things could go either way - for better or for worse - Our Lady has miraculously intervened to bring about a surprising turn of events that reveal in a profound way the presence of Jesus and God’s merciful love. These moments have led to a surprising spread of the Gospel and victory for life over the enemies of the Church. From the conflicts with the Muslims starting in the 8th century to the revival movements in the Middle Ages, to Our Lady of Guadalupe and the messages of Our Lady of Fatima, to the life and work of St. John Paul II, Our Lady has appeared and interceded for her sons and daughters who have turned to her and asked for her help. The Incarnation, through Mary’s “yes”, is the event that has changed history, and Mary, as Mother of God and Mother of the Church, reigning with her Son in heaven, continues to help bring to fulfillment God’s plan for salvation
One of the main theological points in the book is that if we don’t accept Mary as Mother of God, then we lose the divinity of Jesus. If Mary is just “the mother of Jesus” or “the mother of Christ”, soon we think of Jesus as just a great teacher or great prophet but not God. That is how the Muslim’s see Jesus. That Mary is just the mother of Jesus’ human nature is a heresy of the early Church, and Islam and its effects are the result when that error is played out - when one starts denying that Mary is the Mother of God. “Mary at the Crossroads of History” is an easy and compelling read - a real “page turner”. But the point of the book is clear: God intervenes through Mary in human history, and with Mary, we her children, can do what is humanly impossible. Mary brings us God, and with God, the impossible becomes possible for us.
If there are things that we think are impossible to change in our lives - all those things that we resolve to do differently each New Year but never make happen, let’s ask for the intercession of Our Blessed Mother so we can be open to God’s grace and his victory can take flesh in our lives. Christ can make all things new. One simple thing to do is to begin each day by praying the Angelus, the prayer that recounts the Mystery of the Word becoming Flesh and dwelling among us, and repeat that prayer at noon and at 6:00 p.m.. Let’s begin each meeting and each trip we take or project we begin, no matter how small, with a “Hail Mary”, entrusting what we do to her intercession. May God, through the intercession of his Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, bless us in his mercy, reveal his face to us, and grant us his peace.

Solemnidad de María, Santa Madre de Dios - “María en la encrucijada de la historia"
A principios de diciembre, encontré en el fondo del buzón de mi oficina un pequeño libro con la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en la portada. Recibo todo tipo de artículos promocionales, pero no recordaba cuándo llegó este libro a mi buzón. No estaba envuelto y no venía con una nota o carta de presentación. No sé quién me lo dio. Pero como se acercaban las fiestas de la Inmaculada Concepción y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, tomé el libro y le eché un vistazo. El título del libro es “María en la encrucijada de la historia”, y fue escrito por el reverendo Francis Hoffman y se publicó en 2020. El padre Hoffman rastrea cómo en lo que él llama “puntos de inflexión” en la historia, momentos en los que parece que las cosas podrían ir en cualquier dirección, para bien o para mal, Nuestra Señora ha intervenido milagrosamente para provocar un giro sorprendente de los acontecimientos que revelan de manera profunda la presencia de Jesús y el amor misericordioso de Dios. Estos momentos han llevado a una sorprendente difusión del Evangelio y a la victoria de la vida sobre los enemigos de la Iglesia. Desde los conflictos con los musulmanes que comenzaron en el siglo VIII hasta los movimientos de avivamiento en la Edad Media, pasando por Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y los mensajes de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, hasta la vida y obra de San Juan Pablo II, Nuestra Señora se ha aparecido e intercedido por sus hijos e hijas que se han dirigido a ella y le han pedido ayuda. La Encarnación, a través del “sí” de María, es el acontecimiento que ha cambiado la historia, y María, como Madre de Dios y Madre de la Iglesia, reinando con su Hijo en el cielo, sigue ayudando a llevar a cabo el plan de Dios para la salvación.
Uno de los principales puntos teológicos del libro es que si no aceptamos a María como Madre de Dios, entonces perdemos la divinidad de Jesús. Si María es simplemente “la madre de Jesús” o “la madre de Cristo”, pronto pensamos en Jesús como un gran maestro o un gran profeta, pero no como Dios. Así es como los musulmanes ven a Jesús. Que María es simplemente la madre de la naturaleza humana de Jesús es una herejía de la Iglesia primitiva, y el Islam y sus efectos son el resultado cuando se comete ese error, cuando uno comienza a negar que María es la Madre de Dios. “María en la encrucijada de la historia” es una lectura fácil y cautivadora, una verdadera “página atrapante”. Pero el punto del libro es claro: Dios interviene a través de María en la historia humana, y con María, nosotros sus hijos, podemos hacer lo que es humanamente imposible. María nos trae a Dios, y con Dios, lo imposible se vuelve posible para nosotros.
Si hay cosas que pensamos que son imposibles de cambiar en nuestras vidas, todas esas cosas que decidimos hacer de manera diferente cada Año Nuevo pero nunca hacemos que sucedan, pidamos la intercesión de Nuestra Santísima Madre para que podamos estar abiertos a la gracia de Dios y su victoria pueda hacerse realidad en nuestras vidas. Cristo puede hacer nuevas todas las cosas. Una cosa sencilla es empezar cada día rezando el Ángelus, la oración que narra el Misterio del Verbo hecho carne y que habita entre nosotros, y repetir esa oración a las 12 y a las 18 horas. Empecemos cada encuentro, cada viaje o proyecto que emprendamos, por pequeño que sea, con un Ave María, encomendando a su intercesión lo que hagamos. Que Dios, por intercesión de su Madre, la Santísima Virgen María, tenga piedad y nos bendiga, haga resplandecer su rostro sobre nosotros y nos conceda la paz. ¡Que Dios los bendiga y la Virgen los proteja este Año Nuevo!
