Christmas 2023

When I asked my sister what I should get my nephew for Christmas (my nephew is 11 years old), she said that he likes puzzles.  From the time he was little, he always like to do puzzles.  Jigsaw puzzles.  You have to put the pieces together to make a picture.  Does anybody here like to do puzzles?  Did anybody ask for a puzzle for Christmas?  What about Legos?  Does anybody like Legos?  Did anybody ask for Legos for Christmas?  Legos are like a 3-dimensional puzzle.  What do you need to put the puzzle together or to build the Lego?  What helps you to put the puzzle together?  You need a picture... You need instructions.  How would you know where to start if you just were handed a bag of pieces?  With a jigsaw puzzle, if you didn't have the box top with the picture, you couldn’t see your goal.  If you didn’t see the big picture, it might not be impossible to finish the puzzle, but it would take a very long time, be boring, and laborious, and no fun at all.  It would be an exercise of trial and error with every piece.  With the instructions for the Lego, it helps you to build things from the bottom up or the inside out.  Without the diagrams, you could only guess how the interior structure goes together to support the rest of the set since the inside can't be seen just with a picture of the finished model.  Without the instructions, it would be very easy to put the puzzle together in a way not intended by the designer.  Then what would happen?  It would not function properly, and you might not even know why it doesn't work properly.

With the jigsaw puzzle and the Lego, every piece has its proper place , and if you don't use all of the pieces, you know something is wrong; the picture will be incomplete - something essential will be missing.

What makes a puzzle fun is when something “clicks” or comes together and the picture or the model starts to take shape - when you can see more of what it is supposed to be - when you start to see how all those seemingly random and unconnected pieces fit together.  There is something wonderful about it.

Our life is like a puzzle designed by God.  It would be very frustrating, boring, and hard if we tried to put the puzzle of our life together without having  a sense of the big picture and without having some basic instructions regarding how the pieces fit together.  We wouldn’t know where to begin and where we are headed and we would waste a lot of time trying to figure things out ourselves.  Most of our attempts would be trials and errors.

All the pieces of the puzzle come together in Jesus.  He is the answer key and way to complete our puzzle.  All the pieces of the Old Testament find their fulfillment in Jesus.  Jesus is the complete picture.  The image and the plan of God hidden from of old became clear in Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the image of what our lives are meant to be - he is our destiny or goal.  But if we do not look at him and keep comparing where we are at to him, we won’t see what is missing, and we will try to fill in the empty spaces in our life with things that do not fit.  (Did you ever try to force a piece in that isn’t made to fit there? We end up breaking the piece and really messing up the puzzle).

Jesus came into the world to reveal God's design for our fulfillment and help us to put back together the broken and missing pieces of our puzzle.  He is the way we can find fulfillment in working on the puzzle because he was sent by the one who made us.  And he came in a way just like us so he could fill in every part of our life.  The mystery and gift of Christmas is that God has not left us alone to figure out the puzzle ourselves.  And just like my little nephew, the more we actively play with the puzzle - stay engaged with the puzzles, the more we will learn the way of the designer and be willing to take on more and more challenging puzzles without being afraid of the complexity, but be eager to see how with God’s help it will all come together.

Let Jesus help you with the puzzle or mystery that is our life.  Talk to him; listen to him.  It is much more fun if you do.  Be not afraid to work on the puzzle because God is with you.  This is what we celebrate at Christmas.  May God bless you!
