4th Sunday of Easter -  - Who is Pope Leo?  Hearing the voice of the Good Shepherd.  

The election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as our new Pope - Pope Leo XIV - was a real surprise.  I can’t tell you how many people said to me in the hours after his election, “I never thought I would see an America pope in my lifetime!”  (How many of you thought the same thing?)  Everybody is looking for a reaction - a judgement.  What do you think about the new pope?  Is he going to be more like Pope Benedict or more like Pope Francis?  Everybody is trying to interpret every thing he does and says in order to form some sort of judgement. I would say there is a rush to judgment, and different interests are trying to form our judgments in certain ways.  Within hours of his election, I received a text from someone who saw a post from a politicly conservative interest group that pulled the Chicago voting history for a Robert F. Prevost.  Based on this record, the group is claiming that the new pope is a registered Republican who voted in the republican primaries.  All the major news outlets the day after his election reported that a social media account with the name Robert Prevost re-posted several opinion pieces critical of JD Vance and Trump’s immigration policy.  Unlike Pope Francis, he came out on the balcony wearing the same cape as John Paul II and Pope Benedict.  He also gave the blessing in Latin.  He took the name “Leo”.  The last Leo - Leo XIII  - in his famous encyclical that defined Catholic Social teaching, affirmed the rights of workers as well as the rights to property and free enterprise, opposing at the same time both socialism and unfettered capitalism.  Leo XIII addressed the crisis of modernity and the rising threat of Marxism.  Leo XIII sought to revive Thomism as the standard in theological thinking.  Those are all good signs if you are a “conservative”.  In his opening remarks on the balcony, Pope Leo referenced Pope Francis and thanked Pope Francis.  He spoke about looking for ways to be a church that builds bridges and encourages dialogue and is ever open to welcoming.  He said, “we want to be a synodal Church, a Church that moves forward…”  Those are reassuring words for those who are looking for the new pope to be a Francis 2.0 who will continue what Francis began.  I want to encourage everyone not to try to come to a judgment about Pope Leo XIV.  Do not try to put him into a category or a camp or a box.  Don’t try to stick a label on him.  Is he “liberal” or is he “conservative”?  Do not try to define him in political terms or according to an ideology.  Why?  Because as soon as we do that, we stop hearing the voice of the Good Shepherd.  And when we stop hearing the voice of the shepherd, we stop following.  We saw this among liberal Catholics when Pope Benedict was pope.  They called him “God’s Rottweiler” and labeled him an arch-conservative wanting to take the Church back to a more traditional expression of the faith.  It wasn’t long after his election that Pope Francis was labelled a South American-styled socialist.  Once we put someone in a box or a category or label someone, it is a way to dismiss everything else they say.  “I know what kind of guy he is.”  Once we think we already know, we stop listening.  We stop paying attention.  We stop following.  Also, when we put someone in a box and have a set expectation - I’m really hoping that he does this or changes that - either left or right, we get angry or frustrated when our ideas of what we think the church should be are not met.  We become defensive and combative and think it our job as faithful Catholics to set things right.  If I don’t get involved in this fight, this battle, the Church may be lost - we are going to lose all the good things achieved to this point.  We are responding out of fear.  And we then live our faith in a very angry way.   We see this on both the left and the right.  If we have ever gotten like this, it is a sign that we have stopped hearing the voice of the Good Shepherd.  What does Jesus say in the Gospel today:  “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.  No one can take them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand.”  Do we believe that?

          The first words that our new pope said to us were, “Peace be with you all!

Dear brothers and sisters, these are the first words spoken by the risen Christ, the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for God’s flock.  I would like this greeting of peace to resound in your hearts… It is the peace of the risen Christ.  A peace that is unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering.  A peace that comes from God, the God who loves us all, unconditionally.”   He goes on, “God loves you all, and evil will not prevail!  All of us are in God’s hands.  So, let us move forward, without fear, together, hand in hand with God and with one another!   We are followers of Christ.  Christ goes before us…” 

          Our faith is not to be lived as an ideological or political battle.  The victory has been won in Christ, and we communicate that victory by witnessing to our belonging to Christ and the peaceful way that we live that belonging in the world.  We do not overcome divisions by defeating our opponent with arguments or cancelling out our opponent.  We become instruments of peace when we continue to follow the one who has brought peace to our hearts, the one who has overcome the division in our hearts, and when we stay faithful to the grace we have received.  Paul was converted from being a violent and angry defender of his Jewish faith  - thinking it was his job to save things, to someone who could preach boldly about Jesus who justifies us by the forgiveness of our sins through his death and resurrection.  Because Paul and Barnabas know that their lives are in Jesus’ hands, when they are met with violence, abuse, contradiction, and rejection when they preach the Gospel, they do not get angry or fight, but shake the dust from their feet and move on to the next town, filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.  We are made one not by our efforts to overcome division but by recognizing that we are one in Christ who calls us to himself, overcoming the division in our hearts.  Pope Leo’s Papal Motto is, “In illo uno unum” which means, “In the One, we are one.”  It is a phrase taken from St. Augustine’s commentary on Psalm 127 where he explains that “although we Christians are many, in the one Christ we are one.”  What makes us united is not that we are all the same but that we have each responded to the call of the Good Shepherd and follow him -  that we have united ourselves to him. 

          Do we believe that our lives and the life of the Church - God’s flock - is securely in God’s hands?  If that is the case, we will not think it is our job or the job of the pope to keep the Church alive.  Instead, we will listen to the voice of the shepherd chosen by Christ and follow him, filled with joy and the Holy Spirit, confident that our life comes from following him and staying in communion with the Church as she is.

4.º Domingo de Pascua -  - ¿Quién es el Papa León? Escuchando la voz del Buen Pastor.

Mis queridos hermanos en Cristo…. La elección del cardenal Robert Francis Prevost como nuestro nuevo papa, el papa León XIV (Decimocuarto), fue una verdadera sorpresa. No puedo decirles cuántas personas me dijeron en las horas posteriores a su elección: "¡Nunca pensé que vería un papa estadounidense en mi vida!" (¿Cuántos de ustedes pensaron lo mismo?). Todos buscan una reacción, un juicio. ¿Qué opinan del nuevo papa? ¿Se parecerá más al papa Benedicto XVI (decimosexto) o al papa Francisco? Todos intentan interpretar todo lo que hace y dice para formarse algún tipo de juicio. Diría que hay una prisa por juzgar, y diferentes intereses intentan formarse nuestros juicios de ciertas maneras. A las pocas horas de su elección, recibí un mensaje de texto de alguien que vio una publicación de un grupo de interés políticamente conservador que extrajo el historial de votación de Chicago para un tal Robert F. Prevost. Basándose en este registro, el grupo afirma que el nuevo papa es un republicano registrado que votó en las primarias republicanas. Al día siguiente de su elección, todos los principales medios de comunicación informaron que una cuenta en redes sociales con el nombre de Robert Prevost republicó varios artículos de opinión críticos con J.D. Todas estas son buenas señales si eres "conservador". En sus primeras palabras desde el balcón de la Logia de las Bendiciones, el papa León mencionó al papa Francisco y le agradeció. Porque en cuanto lo hacemos, dejamos de escuchar la voz del Buen Pastor. Y cuando dejamos de escuchar la voz del pastor, dejamos de seguirlo. Vimos esto entre los católicos liberales cuando el papa Benedicto XVI era papa. Lo llamaban «el Rottweiler de Dios» y lo tachaban de ultraconservador que quería devolver a la Iglesia a una expresión de fe más tradicional. Poco después de su elección, el papa Francisco fue tildado de socialista con aires sudamericanos. Una vez que encasillamos a alguien, lo categorizamos o lo etiquetamos, es una forma de desestimar todo lo demás que diga. "Sé qué clase de persona es". Cuando creemos que ya lo sabemos, dejamos de escuchar. Dejamos de prestar atención. Dejamos de seguir. Además, cuando encasillamos a alguien y tenemos una expectativa fija —realmente espero que haga esto o cambie aquello—, ya ​​sea a la izquierda o a la derecha, nos enojamos o frustramos cuando no se cumplen nuestras ideas sobre cómo creemos que debería ser la Iglesia. Nos ponemos a la defensiva y combativos, y creemos que es nuestro deber como católicos fieles arreglar las cosas. Si no me involucro en esta lucha, en esta batalla, la Iglesia podría estar perdida; perderemos todo lo bueno que hemos logrado hasta ahora. Reaccionamos por miedo. Y entonces vivimos nuestra fe con mucha ira. Vemos esto tanto en la izquierda como en la derecha. Si alguna vez nos hemos puesto así, es señal de que hemos dejado de escuchar la voz del Buen Pastor. ¿Qué dice Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy? «Yo les doy la vida eterna y no perecerán jamás. Nadie las arrebatará de mi mano. Me las ha dado mi Padre, y él es superior a todos, y nadie puede arrebatarlas de la mano del Padre».

          Las primeras palabras que nos dirigió nuestro nuevo Papa fueron: “¡La paz esté con todos ustedes!  Queridos hermanos y hermanas, este es el primer saludo de Cristo resucitado, el Buen Pastor, que ha dado la vida por la grey de Dios. También yo quisiera que este saludo de paz entre en sus corazones… Esta es la paz de Cristo resucitado, una paz desarmada y una paz desarmante, humilde y perseverante. Proviene de Dios, Dios que nos ama a todos incondicionalmente.”  Continúa: “Dios nos quiere, Dios los ama a todos, y el mal no prevalecerá. Estamos todos en las manos de Dios. Por lo tanto, sin miedo, unidos, tomados de la mano con Dios y entre nosotros sigamos adelante. Somos discípulos de Cristo. Cristo nos precede.…”.

          Nuestra fe no debe vivirse como una batalla ideológica o política. La victoria se ha ganado en Cristo, y la comunicamos dando testimonio de nuestra pertenencia a Cristo y de la paz con la que vivimos esa pertenencia en el mundo. No superamos las divisiones derrotando a nuestro oponente con argumentos ni anulándolo. Nos convertimos en instrumentos de paz cuando seguimos a quien ha traído paz a nuestros corazones, a quien ha vencido la división en nuestros corazones, y cuando nos mantenemos fieles a la gracia que hemos recibido. Pablo pasó de ser un defensor violento y airado de su fe judía, pensando que su trabajo era salvar las cosas, a alguien capaz de predicar con valentía acerca de Jesús, quien nos justifica mediante el perdón de nuestros pecados mediante su muerte y resurrección. Porque Pablo y Bernabé saben que sus vidas están en manos de Jesús, cuando se enfrentan a la violencia, el abuso, la contradicción y el rechazo al predicar el Evangelio, no se enojan ni pelean, sino que se sacuden el polvo de los pies y siguen adelante, llenos de alegría y del Espíritu Santo. Nos hacemos uno no por nuestros esfuerzos por superar la división, sino al reconocer que somos uno en Cristo que nos llama a sí, superando la división en nuestros corazones.  El lema papal del Papa León es «In illo uno unum», que significa «En Uno, somos uno». Es una frase tomada del comentario de San Agustín al Salmo 127, donde explica que «aunque los cristianos somos muchos, en un solo Cristo somos uno». Lo que nos une no es que seamos todos iguales, sino que cada uno ha respondido a la llamada del Buen Pastor y lo sigue, se ha unido a él.

          ¿Creemos que nuestra vida y la vida de la Iglesia —el rebaño de Dios— están seguras en las manos de Dios? Si es así, no pensaremos que es nuestra tarea ni la del Papa mantener viva la Iglesia. En cambio, escucharemos la voz del pastor elegido por Cristo y lo seguiremos, llenos de alegría y del Espíritu Santo, seguros de que nuestra vida viene de seguirlo y de permanecer en comunión con la Iglesia tal como es.  ¡Que Dios los bendiga!
