Did you make a list of what you wanted for Christmas?
If you made a list, raise your hand?
Why did you make a list?
Those who love you asked you to make a list because they want to give you what you want. They want to hear what you want. So we have to ask ourselves: “What do I want?” Then we write it down or have somebody else write it down for us. We express our desire.
What happens when we do that - when we tell others what we want? There is an expectation that someone will listen to us and answer us - give us what we want.
We become eager for that day when we will receive the gift. We look forward with joyful hope that we will get what we want - that our expectation will be fulfilled. It is like a promise has been placed in our heart that there will be a present for me.
Your parents will tell you that the hardest person to shop for - to get a present for - is the person who says, “I don’t need anything. I don’t want anything. Anything will be OK. Whatever you get me is fine.” Those of us who want to give them a gift find that very frustrating. And often, when we get them something, even if we’ve put a lot of thought and effort into getting it, they usually don’t see it. It may be the “perfect” gift - a great benefit to them - but not capture their interest in the least. “That’s nice” they say, and it is put on a shelf in the basement or in the closet. Why didn’t they recognize the value of the gift and the love of the gift giver? Because they never asked themselves or expressed what it is that they really wanted.
So you have to ask and listen to your heart, “What is it that I want?”, and let others know. If we are not asking ourselves the question, we will not recognize the answer - see the gift and how good it is when it is right before our eyes.
All of the readings from the Old Testament express humanity’s need for a savior. They express the longing of God’s people for a savior - what they want. And within that desire is the expectation of fulfillment - the promise of fulfillment. The role of the prophet is to awaken that desire in us - to get us to ask for what we need. And to keep on asking until that promise is fulfilled.
The birth of Jesus that we celebrate at Christmas is the reminder that God keeps his promises, and he does it in unexpected ways. Jesus is the answer to our heart’s desire. What we desire is something we cannot give ourselves because what we desire is greater than this world - beyond this world. We have a desire for eternal life. So the only way that desire can be fulfilled is if God comes to us. What we celebrate at Christmas is that God has come - the Eternal Word of the Father has taken flesh and has made his dwelling among us. God has entered our history and has made himself part of our history. It is not by human generation that the savior comes but by God’s intervention. We cannot save ourselves. It is through the Holy Spirit that the child is conceived - through Mary who was perfectly prepared by God to receive him. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. This is the message to St. Joseph who, responding in faith, goes forward and follows what the Lord says because of the promise that “God is with us” - that God is “Emmanuel”. The baby Jesus looked like any other baby - there was nothing different in his appearance, but Joseph recognized that what was beyond this world was present to him in this world. So he was eager to see how the promise would be fulfilled in this child.
Last Sunday, my family gathered at my Aunt Marie and Uncle Joe’s house for the traditional Italian 7 fish dinner. They are retired, live by themselves, and have a little artificial tree decorating their living room. There were several wrapped presents under the tree. The presents weren’t marked - no tags or labels. My nephew Hugo, who is 8 years old, kept asking, “Aunt Marie, can I open the presents?” He kept asking, “Are the presents for me?” Everybody else was telling him to be quiet. “This is not your home. Sit down and be quiet. Just drop it.” But he kept asking. “Can I open the presents? Are the presents for me?” After dinner, my aunt let him open the presents, and they were for him!
I was amazed at the desire of my nephew - how he wasn’t afraid to ask and how he asked with the expectation - almost a certainty - that there was a gift there for him - even if appearances or the circumstances would indicate otherwise. There was an eagerness on his part to discover the gift waiting for him, and he persisted in his asking. Is he a crazy little boy, or is his way of looking at things filled with hope a better and more realistic way to face our circumstances and find our fulfillment?
The fact that God has come to dwell among us in the flesh - in our human condition - that he has entered our history and remains with us and has redeemed us and our circumstances - means that fulfillment is possible for all who seek him and ask. He is present, and a gift is waiting for us if we have the heart of a child. May we be open to his presence and not be afraid to ask. ¿Por qué hiciste una lista?
Los que te aman te pidieron que hagas una lista porque quieren darte lo que quieres. Quieren escuchar lo que quieres. Entonces tenemos que preguntarnos: "¿Qué quiero?" Luego lo escribimos o hacemos que alguien más lo escriba por nosotros. Expresamos nuestro deseo.
¿Qué sucede cuando hacemos eso, cuando les decimos a los demás lo que queremos? Existe la expectativa de que alguien nos escuche y nos responda, nos dé lo que queremos.
Estamos ansiosos por ese día en que recibiremos el regalo. Esperamos con gozosa esperanza de conseguir lo que queremos, de que nuestras expectativas se cumplan. Es como una promesa en nuestro corazón de que habrá un regalo para mí.
Tus padres te dirán que la persona más difícil de comprar, para obtener un regalo, es la persona que dice: "No necesito nada. No quiero nada. Todo estará bien. Lo que sea que me traigas está bien ". Aquellos de nosotros que queremos darles un regalo lo encontramos muy frustrante. Y a menudo, cuando les obtenemos algo, incluso si hemos pensado mucho y nos hemos esforzado en conseguirlo, normalmente no lo ven. Puede ser el regalo "perfecto", un gran beneficio para ellos, pero no captará su interés en lo más mínimo. "Eso es lindo", dicen, y se coloca en un estante en el sótano o en el armario. ¿Por qué no reconocieron el valor del regalo y el amor del dador del regalo? Porque nunca se preguntaron ni expresaron qué es lo que realmente querían.
Así que tienes que preguntar y escuchar a tu corazón, "¿Qué es lo que quiero?", y dejar que los demás sepan. Si no nos hacemos la pregunta, no reconoceremos la respuesta: no veamos el regalo y lo bueno que es cuando está ante nuestros ojos.

Todas las lecturas del Antiguo Testamento expresan la necesidad de la humanidad de un salvador. Expresan el anhelo del pueblo de Dios por un salvador, lo que quieren. Y dentro de ese deseo está la expectativa de cumplimiento, la promesa de cumplimiento. El papel del profeta es despertar ese deseo en nosotros, hacer que pidamos lo que necesitamos. Y seguir pidiendo hasta que se cumpla esa promesa.
El nacimiento de Jesús que celebramos en Navidad es el recordatorio de que Dios cumple sus promesas y lo hace de formas inesperadas. Jesús es la respuesta al deseo de nuestro corazón. Lo que deseamos es algo que no podemos darnos a nosotros mismos porque lo que deseamos es más grande que este mundo, más allá de este mundo. Tenemos el deseo de la vida eterna. Entonces, la única forma en que ese deseo se puede cumplir es si Dios viene a nosotros. Lo que celebramos en Navidad es que Dios ha venido, el Verbo Eterno del Padre se ha hecho carne y ha habitado entre nosotros. Dios ha entrado en nuestra historia y se ha hecho parte de nuestra historia. No es por generación humana que viene el salvador, sino por la intervención de Dios. No podemos salvarnos a nosotros mismos. Es por obra del Espíritu Santo que el niño es concebido, a través de María que fue perfectamente preparada por Dios para recibirlo. De ella nació Jesús, llamado Cristo. Este es el mensaje a San José quien, respondiendo con fe, avanza y sigue lo que el Señor dice debido a la promesa de que "Dios está con nosotros", que Dios es "Emmanuel". El niño Jesús se parecía a cualquier otro bebé; no había nada diferente en su apariencia, pero José reconoció que lo que estaba más allá de este mundo estaba presente para él en este mundo. Por eso estaba ansioso por ver cómo se cumpliría la promesa en este niño.
El domingo pasado, mi familia se reunió en la casa de mi tía María y mi tío José para la tradicional cena italiana de 7 pescados. Están jubilados, viven solos y tienen un arbolito artificial decorando su sala de estar. Había varios regalos envueltos debajo del árbol. Los regalos no estaban marcados, ni con etiquetas. Mi sobrino Hugo, que tiene 8 años, seguía preguntando: "Tía María, ¿puedo abrir los regalos?". Seguía preguntando: "¿Son los regalos para mí?" Todos los demás le decían que se callara. “Esta no es tu casa. Siéntate y quédate en silencio." Pero siguió preguntando. “¿Puedo abrir los regalos? ¿Son los regalos para mí? Después de la cena, mi tía le dejó abrir los regalos, ¡y eran para él!
Me asombró el deseo de mi sobrino: cómo no tenía miedo de preguntar y cómo preguntaba con la expectativa, casi con certeza, de que había un regalo allí para él, incluso si las apariencias o las circunstancias indicaban lo contrario. Había un entusiasmo de su parte por descubrir el regalo que le esperaba, y persistió en su pedido. ¿Es un niño loco, o su forma de ver las cosas llena de esperanza es una forma mejor y más realista de afrontar nuestras circunstancias y encontrar nuestra realización?
El hecho de que Dios haya venido a habitar entre nosotros en la carne, en nuestra condición humana, que haya entrado en nuestra historia y permanezca con nosotros y nos haya redimido a nosotros y a nuestras circunstancias, significa que la realización es posible para todos los que lo buscan y piden. Él está presente y nos espera un regalo si tenemos el corazón de un niño. Que estemos abiertos a su presencia y no tengamos miedo de pedir. Porque solo pidiendo recibiremos; sólo si buscamos, encontraremos y abriremos lo que nos traerá gran alegría. ¡Que Dios los bendiga! ¡Y Feliz Navidad!
